Pandora 2025
(oil on board)
Acting as a companion piece to Gradiva
2025 and painted immediately after it, this is an
interpretation of the myth. The Pandora legend addresses the question
of why there is evil in the
world, according to which, Pandora opened a jar (pithos; commonly
referred to as 'Pandora's box') releasing all the evils of humanity. It
gave me the opportunity of experimenting with decalcomania – a technique devised
by surrealist Oscar Dominguez. The dark, swirling, chaotic underworld
of the human psyche escapes into the world through fissures caused by
Pandora's fingers.
