Borin Van Loon: Illustrator: Micromania cover
Micromania cover of paperback edition (line, watercolour dyes, gouache, collage) 1984

A happy coincidence. Having been commissioned by Gollancz to provide the line drawings for the hardback edition, Borin happened to be showing some work to the Art Director at Sphere and mention was made of the paperback edition of Micromania. It seems like poetic justice that he was commissioned to provide the cover. One interior caricature was a full length figure of a typical micromania 'addict' and Borin bestowed upon him – and it had to be a 'him', didn't it? – eyeballs in the shape of television screens with small irises on the screens. For some reason, Gollancz considered this to look rather horrific, so they eyes had to be toned down. However, Sphere were up for it, so they reappeared on the figure on the full colour cover. Remember that this was 1984, twelve years before Borin bought his first Mac, and it was a time of Commodores, Acorns, Pac Man, Space Invaders and toys for boys. Sample line illustrations are shown below with a cameo appearance by Borin's comic character Bof in the second example.
